Claudius Ptolemy, Greek mathematician, astronomer, astrologer and geographer, offers us the oldest surviving account of Ireland c.150 AD, in the form of a set of co-ordinates which correspond to the map below. Ptolemy, who lived in Egypt under Roman rule, produced his maps by using the reports and accounts of seafarers, traders, and the military, which he combined with the appropriate mathematics.
